Transvaginal ultrasound, or intrauterine ultrasound, is a more accurate and higher-resolution imaging method for examining the uterus and ovaries. This ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound waves) to capture images. It is one of the methods for assessing abnormalities in the uterus and ovaries, as well as examining the size and number of ovarian follicles and the thickness of the endometrium, which is particularly useful in infertility treatments.In a transvaginal ultrasound, performed through the vagina, the specialist examines the vagina, uterus, cervix, endometrium, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and more.

 

Uses of transvaginal ultrasound

  • Early pregnancy evaluation: To confirm pregnancy, assess fetal health, and diagnose ectopic or abnormal pregnancies.
  • Assessment of pelvic pain: To identify the cause of sudden or chronic pelvic pain.

Procedure for transvaginal ultrasound

The doctor or technician gently inserts the ultrasound transducer, which is covered with a lubricating gel, into the patient's vagina. The transducer sends images to the ultrasound machine, which produces clear images of the internal pelvic organs. This process usually takes a few minutes and may cause some discomfort but is generally not painful.
